Texas state Representative Armando Martinez (D-Weslaco) was shot in the head, during a New Year’s Eve gathering,  according to officials.

A stray bullet hit Martinez outside of a home just after ringing in 2017 with his family and friends, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office revealed.

“It felt like a sledgehammer hit me over the head,” a hospital-bound Martinez told KGBT-TV.

His wife, Marisa Martinez, noticed that her husband had been shot when she saw a small hole on the left top side of his head, Eddie Guerra, the Hidalgo County Sheriff, told The Monitor.

The couple quickly rushed to a local hospital and doctors brought him to Valley Baptist Medical Center where Martinez underwent surgery.

Surgeons managed to remove the bullet and discovered that it hit parts of his skull without damaging his brain.

It is not clear who was responsible for the incident.

Representative Armando Martinez worked in Weslaco’s Fire Department in 1998 and served as a health instructor and paramedic before he became a state rep.
