Police have arrested a Texas couple in the horrific sex attack on a 1-year-old baby girl.

Issac Andrew Cardenas, 23, has been taken into custody in connection with his purported involvement in the vicious sexual assault after authorities revealed the little girl suffered from several severe stab wounds to her genital area and body.

Crystal Herrera, 22, called 911 stating that an infant relative under the age of two was attacked and bitten by dogs when she wandered outside. Officers arrived on the scene and learned that the dogs were not aggressive and the infant had suffered from wounds consistent with a brutal sexual assault, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Authorities were notified of the emergency phone call on the morning of New Year’s Eve. Herrera said that the one-year-old sustained the dog bites the night before.

Since then, Cardenas has been charged with a first-degree felony of super aggravated sexual assault. He now is facing a possible sentence of 25 years to life behind bars plus a potential $10,000 penalty. If found guilty, he would also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

“You can’t even imagine what would possess somebody to do something like this to anyone, much less an innocent child that’s completely defenseless,” Javier Salazar, the Bexar County Sheriff, said.

Cardenas and Herrera’s accounts of what happened were not consistent, according to police.

Investigators arrested Cardenas after he was interviewed and is being held on a $300,000 bond.

Herrera has been charged with injury to a child by omission. She is facing confinement in a state jail for not more than two years or less than 180 days, with a possible penalty not to surpass $10,000.

According to KSAT, both suspects remain in custody for the disturbing sex attack on the child.

The infant has been treated at a hospital and is listed in stable condition. She will be turned over to Child Protective Services.
