Video taken from surveillance cameras captured the heartbreaking moment a 3-year-old boy in pajamas wandered into a Detroit gas station in freezing cold weather looking for his mother.

Detroit Police told WXYZ the little boy walked into a Citgo gas station only wearing pajamas in 20-degree weather around 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning and ask the clerk for candy.

After giving the boy some sweets, the clerk contacted authorities.

Officers spoke with the child and then drove him around the neighborhood in the patrol car to see if he recognized where he lived.

Just before 6 a.m. the boy’s mother ran into the gas station after seeing police cars and was reunited with her son.

The woman told Detroit Police that she had gone into her car just outside the apartment to speak with her friend. The mom returned to find the boy missing and began looking for him.

Child Protective Services have launched an inquiry to ensure the home is a safe environment for the child.
