Mexican authorities have arrested a juvenile hit squad consisting of two teenage girls, a boy, and a woman for the executions of three young teens aged 13, 14, and 15 in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

A Tamaulipas law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the murders, which occurred Saturday in the state capital of Ciudad Victoria, appeared to be related to a dispute over control of drug distribution in the city.

The reputed adolescent hit squad was reportedly traveling in a van when they pulled up and opened fire, killing victims on the street in a poor section of the city.

Officials said a 17-year-old boy, who survived the shooting, remains in critical condition at a medical center, the Associated Press reported.

NiƱo sicarios or child assassins are not uncommon in Mexico. Back in 2010, a 14-year-old boy, who happens to be a U.S. citizen, admitted to brutally executing four people in Mexico after authorities discovered their headless bodies hanging from a bridge.

However, teenage girls have seldom been involved in such illicit acts of violence.

For the past year, Ciudad Victoria, a known stronghold of the ultra-violent Los Zetas cartel, has been ground zero for a brutal turf war between rival factions following a split within the criminal organization.

Experts have widely credited the Zetas with laying waste to an entire generation of Mexican youth by remaining at the forefront of child recruitment as trained hitmen into the cartel ranks.
