South Carolina jurors unanimously condemned Dylan Roof to death, for the June 2015 murder of nine black churchgoers while they attended Bible study in Charleston.

The federal jury deliberated for less than three hours whether Roof should be sentenced to death or life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to Vice News, Roof was starring “straight ahead” as the verdict was read by U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel.

Jurors unanimously agreed on each of the non-statutory aggravating factors against Roof, which included the fact that the crime was racially motivated, he had intentionally sought to cause harm to others and showed a lack of remorse.

The jury had asked the judge to clarify two points in the jury instructions, the first was whether or how Roof posed a risk to others in prison, by either committing or inciting violence.

The jury also asked the judge to explain the definition of “safely confined.”

Roof showed little remorse during the closing arguments of his trial’s sentencing phase on Tuesday, saying he felt as if he “had to do it.” showed no remorse
