In a rare event, authorities in El Salvador, which maintains one of the highest murder rates in the world according to the United Nations, has managed to go 24 hours without a single recorded killing.

El Salvador, which has a population of 6 Million people, has so far recorded ten reported murders in the first two weeks of 2017.

During a news conference on Thursday, National Civil Police Commissioner Howard Cotto said officials reported no homicides the previous day on Wednesday in the Central American nation.

According to The Associated Press, Jan. 22, 2015 was the last time El Salvador managed to go an entire day without any killings and once in 2013.

Last year, the country was ravaged by gang-related violence, averaging 14.4 murders a day.

In 2015, homicides peaked at 104 per 100,000 residents, the highest rate for any nation not considered a war zone.

El Salvador remained one of the most dangerous countries in 2016, averaging 81.2 homicides per 100,000 residents.

However, the murder rate managed to decrease by almost 20 percent.

Turf wars between rival gangs referred to as “Maras,” fighting for control of the drug trafficking trade and organized crime rackets including extortion is the primary factor for the spiraling violence in the Central American country.
