A hero passerby fatally shot a gunman who ambushed an Arizona State trooper who was helping at the location of a fatal car accident.

The trooper, identified as Edward Andersson, was assisting a woman who had been ejected from a vehicle in a rollover crash when the gunman viciously attacked him.

Luckily, a Good Samaritan intervened and shot and killed the assailant in the middle of the street.

Currently, the Department of Public Safety in Arizona is trying to track down the hero who stepped in, because they believe the trooper may not have survived if he didn’t run to his aid.

Frank Milstead, the DPS Director, sent a message out to the Good Samaritan, who he has yet to find. The message read: “Thank you because I don’t know if my trooper would be alive today without your assistance.”

Another driver called authorities about the gunfire, and a trooper was dispatched to that call when he noticed the car crash and stopped, Milstead and DPS Captain Damon Cecil stated.

When the Arizona State trooper started to close lanes and set up flares, a suspect attacked him physically and opened fire, ABC7 reported.

The officer was shot at least once next to his chest and was wrestled to the ground by the gunman. The man was on top of the trooper and was “getting the better of him,” as he slammed the Andersson’s head into the pavement.

A passerby soon spotted the attack and asked the officer if he needed assistance. Andersson said yes, and when the suspect disregarded the passerby and resumed attacking the trooper, the Good Samaritan gunned him down.

DPS stated that Andersson has been a member of the department for 27 years, and is awaiting surgery for his injuries in the hospital.

Milstead said he expected the worst when he went to the hospital to check on the hurt trooper, who is currently listed in stable condition.

The woman involved in the crash succumbed to her injuries.

Authorities indicated that they were trying to ascertain what happened and that the investigation is facing significant obstacles with the trooper seriously injured and two of the others involved dead. No one’s identities have been published.

Investigators are trying to figure out how the rollover crash happened and whether the suspect was involved with the first report of gunshots.
