Mexican soap opera star Kate del Castillo, who went with Sean Penn to his Rolling Stone interview with the infamous drug lord El Chapo, says the controversial meeting has been a horrible burden on her life.

“It has not been a good year,” the 44-year-old del Castillo, 44, said to the Associated Press. “I couldn’t work… people didn’t want me because they were afraid.”

Del Castillo, who escaped to Los Angeles in exile, says there’s a double standard in Mexico when it comes to women and men.

“Why am I the only one who is being persecuted? Because I’m a woman. If I were a man, this would never have happened. I get it, especially in Mexico — we’re very macho,” she added, also noting that she is concerned about the security of her parents who still reside in Mexico.

The actress acknowledged that the meeting with El Chapo was “a little too risky,” but insists that she hasn’t done anything wrong.

“You can like it or not, but it’s nothing illegal,” she maintained.

Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman made his infamous escape from a maximum-security prison in Mexico with help from members of his violent Sinaloa cartel in July 2015. At the time, he was behind bars for drug trafficking and murder.

Using encrypted cell phones, ‘El Chapo’ reached out to del Castillo, who was one of his favorite actresses. He had initially reached out to her years prior through his attorney.

News then broke that the soap star helped to arrange a meeting with film actor Penn and Guzman back in 2015. Three months later, Penn reflected on the interview in an article in Rolling Stone.

Mexican authorities and investigators with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration traced the cellphones used by Guzman, which ultimately led to his capture.

Guzman was brought back to a Mexican prison and has around-the-clock security. He is awaiting extradition to the U.S. to face federal charges in several states related to drug trafficking.

Del Castillo currently stars in the Netflix drama “Ingobernable,” playing Mexico’s first lady.
