President Trump warns Chicago.

On Tuesday, President Trump warned Chicago city officials, specifically Mayor Rham Emanuel to end the “carnage” in the wake of spiraling violence or the federal government will step to address the issue.

“If Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible ‘carnage’ going, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016), I will send in the Feds!” Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday night.

During the Presidential campaign, Trump vowed if elected to curb Chicago’s astonishing high murder rate, which hit a record high last year.

Back in August Trump claimed the city’s homicide problem could be solved “in a week” if city officials allowed law enforcement to take tougher measures.

The move would be unprecedented, normally the President only sends federal officials to areas hit by natural disasters such as the case when Hurricane Katrina destroyed the city of New Orleans.

The Chicago Police Department responded to the remarks of President Trump in a released statement on Tuesday night saying city law enforcement officials would welcome an interagency effort to curb the violence, NBC Chicago reported.

“As the Mayor said just a few hours ago, the Chicago Police Department is more than willing to work with the federal government to build on our partnerships with DOJ, FBI, DEA and ATF and boost federal prosecution rates for gun crimes in Chicago,”Chicago police Supt. Eddie Johnson said in a statement.
