Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR) announced the extradition of a top Sinaloa Cartel operative, who is the security chief of Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, the son of recently extradited drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.

The PGR said in a statement that federal police agents turned over custody of Jesus Beltran Raul Leon, also known as ‘El Chuy-Raul’ over to the U.S. Marshals Service on Thursday morning at Mexico City’s International Airport.

Raul Leon, who now joins ‘El Chapo’ as the latest defendants to face charges in the U.S., was apprehended during a military operation in Culiacan, Sinaloa in November 2014, Proceso reported.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois named ‘El Chuy-Raul’ with other leading Sinaloa cartel figures including Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar and his brother Jesus Alfredo Guzman-Salazar,’ along with their father ‘El Chapo,’ and his longtime partner Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, on charges of conspiracy, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and money laundering.

The charges stemmed from an extensive DEA investigation, which involved the cooperation of Pedro and Margarito Flores, Chicago twin brothers who at one time oversaw U.S. distribution for the Sinaloa cartel.

The agency noted that once the extradition procedure had been exhausted, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) issued the corresponding agreement granting extradition of Raul Leon to the U.S.

“With the exhaustion of the legal remedies to which the claimant was entitled, the agreement was firm and enforceable,” he said.

U.S. federal prosecutors say Jesus Raul Beltran Leon imported large quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana To various cities in the United States, as well as organized, directed and monitored the drug trafficking and money laundering activities a criminal cell operating in Mexico.

‘El Chuy-Raul’ is the sixth person extradited from Mexico to the United States this year.
