A leader of a Los Zetas Mexican cartel faction who was arrested earlier this week was executed inside a detention center in the Tamaulipas state capital of Ciudad Victoria, police officials have confirmed.

As JammedUp News reported, José Luis Cano Lumbreras, alias “El Cano” or “Comandante Cano” a purported leader of the Old School Zetas faction of the Los Zetas cartel who was behind a wave of violence in the capital city, was arrested last Tuesday following a joint raid involving the state prosecutor’s office along with local and federal police..

According to officials with the Tamaulipas Coordination Group (GCT) the state police agency responsible for security in the state, ‘El Cano’ was killed inside the Center Execution of Sanctions (CEDES) in Ciudad Victoria.

In a statement by the GCT, Lumbreras was ambushed as he returned from a hearing by other inmates and was strangled to death the day after he was admitted to the facility, El Universal reported.

The 37-year-old organized crime figure was admitted to the penitentiary center on Wednesday on multiple charges including kidnapping, robbery, and murder.

“El Cano” was arrested on Tuesday along with three of his bodyguards identified only as Saúl “N”, Jesús Mario “N” and Erik “N” during an operation in the Valle de Aguayo, section of Ciudad Victoria.

A second raid that same night led to the arrest of six other members of his criminal band.

Unofficial reports had ‘El Cano’ as the regional leader of the Old School Zetas, who have engaged in an ongoing brutal turf war for control of Ciudad Victoria against a rival faction from Nuevo Laredo known as the Cartel del Noreste, following a split within Los Zetas, Mexico’s most ruthless criminal organization.

Terror has continued to grip the locality and has since spread to other cities in Tamaulipas and also in the neighboring states of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila as the two groups jockey control of the lucrative drug trade.
