Mexican authorities have arrested Eleazar Palomo Castillo, nicknamed “El Cochi,” the top leader of the Beltrán Leyva cartel in the border state of Nuevo León.

The detainee, also known as “El 19,” operated in the locality of San Pedro Garza, the urban center of Monterrey, where he controlled the illegal drug trafficking operations for the criminal organization.

According to a bulletin by the Navy Secretariat (Semar), “El Cochi” was detained by Mexico’s Naval Marines during a predawn operation in the municipality of Apodaca, Nuevo León.

After identifying the vehicle the capo traveled in; naval agents established a strategic security checkpoint near the Mariano Escobedo International Airport, Proceso reported.

However, as Naval officers attempted to inspect the vehicle, the suspect attempted to flee, and a chase ensued which culminated in the arrest of Palomo Castillo.

Officials said that “El Cochi” was sought by authorities for an arrest warrant on charges of kidnapping, criminal association, and organized crime offenses.

Following his arrest, Palomo Castillo was interrogated by agents with the Specialized Office of Investigation of Organized Delinquency for the Attorney General’s Office.

The arrest of the Beltrán Leyva cartel leader generated confusion in Nuevo Leon on Saturday after media outlets reported of his capture back in December 2015.
