Five gunmen, one marine killed during fierce gun battle in Culiacan, Mexico

Authorities in the southwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa say five cartel gunmen and one marine were killed in a fierce gunbattle died early Tuesday morning.

In a statement, the state prosecutor’s office said a military patrol came under heavy attack by a convoy with heavily armed assailants in the Villa del Real and Camino Real sections of Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa around 3:40 a.m. on Tuesday.

The attack on the patrol unleashed an intense security operation. Additional marine elements and a military helicopter were dispatched to the scene.

Officials said the five gunmen killed, identified as all males in their 20’s, were armed AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles, donning military-grade tactical vests.

Authorities recovered four AK-47 rifles, one AR-15, and a black Acura MDX SUV, recently used in a robbery in the state of Jalisco, according to Mexico’s El Debate.

Officials said state and Federal authorities launched preventive operations in order to safeguard residents in the capital.

Culiacan is currently hosting the Caribbean Series baseball championship.

Mexico defeated Cuba 1-0 Monday night to book a spot in the championship game.
