Anti-narcotics security forces in Mexico have captured a key figure within the hyper-violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) during a military operation in the western state of Jalisco, officials announced.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR) reported the arrest of José Oscar García Ramírez, alias ‘El Cabús.’ He has been identified as a CJNG operator and top lieutenant of the syndicate’s top boss Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as ‘El Mencho,’ who remains a top security objective by the Mexican government and most sought after drug lord wanted by U.S. authorities.

PGR officials said federal agents, in coordination with the military, secured the capture of 40-year-old Garcia Ramirez during a raid in the vicinity of Tamazula de Gordian, Jalisco, on Monday.

“The detainee is identified as an operator responsible for running a drug distribution network and coordinating communications for a criminal organization with a presence in that entity,” the PGR said in a statement.

Senior law enforcement officials say Garcia Ramirez was responsible for transmitting the orders from ‘El Mencho’ to the criminal organization’s regional chiefs and plaza bosses, Proceso reported.

Furthermore, ‘El Cabús’ also coordinated the large-scale purchasing of weapons for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

Additionally, the Attorney General’s Office said that García Ramírez allegedly organized the theft of hydrocarbon in the region where he was captured.

Officials said authorities secured the arrest of García Ramírez, who was detained in the company of Ana Silveria “N”, without firing a single shot. Police also recovered several high-powered firearms and over a kilo of methamphetamine.
