A shootout erupted early Wednesday morning between police and a group of gunmen in the city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, which left one suspect dead and two more detained.

In a statement, officials with the Tamaulipas Coordination Group, which is responsible for security in the state, said around 10:30 a.m. state police were conducting security patrol on Puerta de Sol Avenue when they detected a gray Ford Grand Marquis with no license plates.

When police patrol approached the vehicle. the three armed crew sped off in an attempt to flee, setting off a chase through the streets of Reynosa.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle lost control and crashed as they crossed a drawbridge.

The passenger exited the car and started firing an automatic weapon against the state police, who returned fire killing the gunmen, Proceso reported.

Meanwhile, the driver, along with the other crew member in the back seat, came out with their hands up “placing them on their chest to surrender.”

Red Cross doctors arrived at the scene to administer first aid to the aggressor, but he had already died. The two other assailants were taken into custody and turned over to the Mexican Attorney General’s Office.

The highways surrounding Reynosa, which is a known stronghold of the Gulf drug cartel, has experienced a wave of hijackings and kidnappings in recent weeks.

On Tuesday, police discovered two alleged hijackers alive, but severely beaten and duct taped to a bridge over one of the city’s roadways. A narco message from a local Gulf cartel leader sought to distance the crime syndicate from the recent crime affecting the city.
