Florida teen charged with first-degree murder

A 15-year-old Florida teen has been charged with first-degree murder for fatally shooting his mother’s boyfriend after he threatened to “torment her until she committed suicide.”

The killing occurred in the early morning hours on Wednesday at the residence of Jessica Whidden, her son Michael, and her boyfriend, Paul Gregg Jr. in Mulberry, Florida.

Whidden had apparently not been staying at the house for several nights because of her recent altercations with Gregg, ABC Action News.

However, she went back home on Tuesday to get ready to go out to dinner with friends.

Before she came, Michael urged Gregg not to start any fights with his mother.

Nonetheless, the two got into a dispute, and Gregg accused Whidden – who authorities say has another boyfriend – of lying to him.

Whidden left, but when she came back, the two started fighting again.

This time, Gregg Jr. retrieved a steak knife from the kitchen and went into the bathroom where his girlfriend was.

He reportedly started screaming that “he wished he could kill her, but he would torment her until she committed suicide.”

At that point, Michael prevented Gregg Jr. from going to the bathroom and claimed that the boyfriend was holding up the knife and pointing it at his mother at times, but he ultimately walked away.

Afterward, Michael went to his room and obtained a shotgun and came back out and pointed it at Gregg Jr., who was on the couch.

He says Gregg Jr. got up and walked toward to the bedroom where more guns were kept. Michael shot him as he got near the closet.

After the occurrence, Michael and his mom went to a church and contacted police.

Michael told authorities that “he had enough” and was scared that if he didn’t do something, the man might hurt his mother.

Jessica Whidden told officers that her boyfriend had been abusive before, but that she had never reported it. She also said that her son had tried to defend her in past incidents.

Michael was taken into custody on of first-degree murder. It is not clear whether he will be tried as an adult or minor.

Relatives told The Ledger that Whidden and her boyfriend were heavy drinkers and often got into arguments.

Whidden has a prior record for driving with a suspended license, and her boyfriend had arrests for drunk driving and battery. Michael has no prior criminal history.

“It’s just a hot mess,” Polk County Sheriff Gracy Judd said. “We have a man who was drunk. A girlfriend he’s lived with for five years. We got a kid in the middle of this manure pile, and we’re trying to sort it out.”
