A major military operation in Culiacan early Saturday morning resulted in the capture of Francisco Javier Zazueta Rosales, aka “Pancho Chimal,” the top lieutenant for Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, the son of drug kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.

According to military sources, Zazueta Rosales is the notoriously violent chief of an assassin’s cell called ‘Los Chamales.’ He is one of the prime suspects responsible for the ambush of the military convoy in September 2016, which left five soldiers dead and 11 others wounded.

Additionally, officials said Riodoce the narco operator is the Sinaloa Cartel leader in the city of Culiacán, who is responsible for controlling the sale, distribution, and trafficking of drugs to the United States.

Earlier reports by Mexican media outlets, which indicated that the military operation led to the arrest of the son of the recently extradited leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, were proven false.

The capture occurred just after midnight in the northern colonies of the city. Witnesses reported of low flying helicopters arriving, and exchanges of gunfire were heard while the military flooded surrounding streets.

At least a dozen armored units and more than one hundred members of the National Defense Secretariat, along with the Mexican Attorney General’s Office, took part in the action, Proceso reported.

Violence in the state has spiraled in recent weeks as the result of an internal struggle for control of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Guzmán Salazar, who assumed a leadership position following his father’s apprehension back in January 2016, has been at the center of an internal war for control of his father’s criminal empire against Damaso Lopez Nunez, a top capo and former lieutenant of ‘El Chapo.’

Lopez-Nunez was reportedly behind a failed attempt to kill Iván Archivaldo Guzmán along with his brother Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar and ‘El Chapo’s’ longtime partner Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada on February 4th.

Gunmen ambushed the brothers and Zambada as they arrived at a meeting with Damaso Lopez in the mountains of Badirgurato, Sinaloa. All three managed to escape. However, the sons of ‘El Chapo’ were reportedly injured in the attack.

Los Chamales has remained at the center of massive gun battles, which erupted in the region since the ambush with gunmen loyal to Lopez Nunez.

The raging violence in Sinaloa has prompted authorities to close schools citing safety concerns.
