Police officer shot and killed in Southern California

A police officer in Southern California was killed and another wounded during a shootout with a gang member on Monday.

Law enforcement officials said the deadly confrontation occurred early Monday around 8:04 a.m. after Whittier police officers responded to a three-car accident at the intersection of Mar Vista Street and Colima Road located 22 miles east of downtown LA, county.

According to sheriff’s deputies, as the officers arrived on the scene, two drivers, were assisting the suspect in pushing a vehicle which was stolen around a corner after he rear-ended other cars at a stop light.

Police told the Whittier Daily News the officer’s attempted to interview the alleged gang member who was described as “all tattooed up,” when he pulled a semi-automatic weapon and shot both cops.

The armed assailant was also shot after the officers managed to return fire.

Paramedics rushed the wounded officers to UCI Medical Center, where one of them later died.

Whittier police said the shooting suspect, who’s identity has yet to be released, was taken to LA County-USC Medical Center, where he was treated for gunshot wounds, Fox11 Los Angeles reported.

Officials said both surviving officer and suspect remain in stable condition.
