Immigration officials have arrested an undocumented foreigner who is a self-admitted MS-13 gang member after New York City authorities released the man despite requests to hold him in custody.

Estivan Rafael Marques Velasquez is a “self-admitted” associate of the MS-13 criminal group but was released by New York police on February 16th after he served time behind bars for disorderly conduct.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) indicated in a press release that the agency had sent a request asking that local police hold Marques Velasquez in custody until he could be turned over for deportation.

Nonetheless, New York City officials released Marques Velasquez, but ICE arrested and detained the gang member in Queens soon after.

“This man is by his admission a member of a violent street gang, and was released into the community,” New York Field Office Director, Thomas Decker, announced in a statement.

Decker also asked New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to alter the current sanctuary city policy, which attempts to shield criminal undocumented immigrants from federal law.

“ICE continues to welcome changes to the city’s policy which is creating a potentially unsafe environment for its residents,” Decker added. “ICE remains steadfast in solidifying its relationship with law enforcement in the interest of public safety and national security.”

Marques Velasquez was directed for removal back in 2015 and will now face deportation by ICE.

There are approximately 1 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. who have been ordered for removal by immigration courts but have not yet been apprehended by ICE.
