The son of the famous Brazilian soccer legend Pele has turned himself into police to complete a sentence for money laundering and drug trafficking.

Edson Cholbi do Nascimento, who used to play for his father’s Santos team and is better known as Edinho, was found guilty back in 2005 but has been fighting the charges ever since.

The 46-year-old man turned himself in after a court lessened his original 33-year sentence to 12 years and ten months behind bars, the BBC reported,

He rejects the charges and has pledged to continue protesting his innocence, but the court ruled that he must be incarcerated while he appeals.

He has said his only communication with drug traffickers was as a user.

After the court had reached its decision, he told the media “things will work themselves out. I am very frustrated because I am accused of money laundering, and I never did that. There is no evidence of that,” he stated.

Referring to four other men sentenced in the case, Edinho also noted: “The argument is about my friendship with the others accused. I never denied that, but I never laundered money.”

The soccer player, who is one of Pele’s seven children, was a goalie in the 1990s for Santos, where his father played for his entire career. His professional career was brief, but he found work afterward as a club manager.

Pele, whose real name is Edson, retired in 1974 and is now 76-years-old. He helped Brazil to three World Cup titles and is known as one of the greatest players of all time.

“There is not a shred of evidence against my son,” he stated back in 2006.
