Law enforcement officials say an armed man, who opened fire on a central Florida pipeline construction site, was killed during a shootout with sheriff’s deputies following a pursuit.

Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast announced in a statement that the gunman began shooting from a high-powered rifle on Sunday morning at the equipment being used to build the Sabal Trail pipeline, a natural gas line that will cross from Alabama to Florida.

According to a local ABC News affiliate, Citrus County Sherriff’s deputies, and the Florida Highway Patrol chased the man until he crashed on Highway 41near Floral City, which is located about 70 miles north of Tampa.

Prendergast said that the man got out and openedĀ fire on deputies, who returned gunfire and killed the suspect.

Officials said no deputies were hurt during the pursuit or the shootout. Prendergast said other weapons were discovered in the suspect’s vehicle.

The suspect’s name has not been revealed. The deputies have been placed on leave pending an investigation.
