A father, who fatally gunned down 17-year-old Georgia high school student Jordan Middleton as he ran out of a bedroom closet after his daughter snuck him into their home in the middle of the night, says he mistook the teen for an intruder.

Dereck Fulton shot and killed Middleton after alleging that he thought the teen was an intruder in Grovetown, Georgia on Saturday, WJBF reported.

Fulton’s daughter, 14, had snuck Middleton into the home in the middle of the night, just before 3 am, and brought him into their guest bedroom.

Fulton shot the boy in the chest as he ran from the bedroom’s closet after the father heard noises coming from the room, Columbia County police reported.

The suspect told authorities that he heard sounds coming from downstairs and that his dog was barking. Believing there was an intruder was in the home, he took his gun and went to check out the situation.

The family dog was barking at the door of the guest bedroom, and Fulton screamed out twice warning that he was armed and if someone was there, they needed to identify themselves.

When there was no response, he entered the room, and that’s when Middleton ran from the closet.

Fulton shot his gun as Jordan Middleton was trying to get out of the room, he was hit once in the chest, and he was pronounced dead on the home’s foyer floor.

It was after Fulton shot the boy that he found out his daughter had brought him into the home, and Fulton then started to perform CPR on the teenager.

Middleton attended Grovetown High School, and his former basketball coach said that he was “a great kid. Very likable, always had a smile on his face.”

Police indicated that no charges had been filed, but the investigation is still pending.

Under Georgia law, homeowners are permitted to use deadly force if a person is breaking in or has broken into a house in a violent manner and the homeowner believes that the intruder poses a danger to the home.

A homeowner is also authorized to use deadly force if a person who is not a member of the household has unlawfully and forcibly entered the residence.
