Nine people injured in a crash involving border agents and accused human smuggler.

SAN DIEGO — U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officials say nine people were injured, one critically, after a chase involving a suspected human smuggler and Border agents ended in a crash near the San Ysidro port of entry.

A Border Parol official said officers attempted to pull over the suspect’s Chevrolet Trailblazer, but the driver sped off, NBC San Diego reported.

According to Mark Endicott, CBP supervisor agent for the San Diego sector told The San Diego Union Tribute a chase ensued and 15 minutes later the suspect’s SUV crashed into a boulder near the entrance to Lake Morena County Park.

All nine people in the car suffered injuries, one was listed in critical condition.

Endicott said CBP agents believe the driver, a U.S. citizen, was attempting to smuggle his passengers into the country. All of the passengers were Mexican nationals who were in the U.S. illegally.

The accused human smuggler was treated at a local hospital and subsequently taken into custody to face prosecution on federal charges in connection with the incident, the Union-Tribune reported.

“This incident is a sad example of how human smugglers show utter disregard for human life in order to profit from criminal activity,” Endicott said in a statement.

Officials have yet to release the names of the nine individuals involved in the crash and haven’t indicated what prompted border agents to stop the vehicle.
