Over a dozen Los Zetas gunmen killed in gunbattle with the Mexican military in Nuevo Laredo

Law enforcement officials in Mexico have reported the deaths of 13 reputed Los Zetas cartel members, who were killed in several armed confrontations with the military on Saturday in the northern border state of Tamaulipas.

In a statement, Mexico’s National Defense Ministry said the clashes erupted near the city of Nuevo Laredo, a stronghold of the Los Zetas criminal organization, located just across from Laredo Texas.

According to the statement, three military troops were injured during the gun battles.

The agency detailed the events, which unfolded after an indeterminate group of gunmen in several vehicles individuals attacked an army patrol who responded to the aggression with gunfire.

The gunbattles erupted in Nuevo Laredo, located on the border from Laredo, Texas

Officials said as the situation intensified, the other alleged offenders, aboard several vehicles, perpetrated two more assaults against military personnel, La Ràzon reported.

The military patrols were carried out with the expressed purpose of disrupting the criminal activities of the Los Zetas and to inflict damage to the command structure of cartel.

Authorities say the 13 perpetrators have yet to be identified.

The three wounded soldiers remain hospitalized at a medical facility in stable condition.

Authorities recovered12 long arm assault rifles, a rocket launcher, a grenade, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a packet of cocaine and three vehicles, one of them armored.

The bodies of the aggressors, along with the seized arms, drugs and vehicles were made available to the corresponding authorities to continue with the investigations.
