An Illinois man who managed to evade murder charges when prosecutors neglected to grant him a speedy trial was fatally shot on Monday night after he posted bail.

Kamari Belmont, 23, was in a car about a mile away from a county jail when an SUV pulled up next to him, and a gunman began shooting –striking him in the back and torso.

The SUV crashed, and the suspects fled the scene.

Belmont was hit multiple times, and he died after he collapsed in the street. He was released from jail after his friend posted $100,000 bail on Monday.

Belmont was charged with robbery and murder for the shooting death of 40-year-old Sorrell Marshall back in 2015, according to the New York Daily News reported.

He was originally charged with attempted murder, and the charges were enhanced to murder one year later.

The charges were ultimately dropped in January after prosecutors waited too long to put him on trial, court records indicated.

Michael Johnson, Belmont’s lawyer, said he doesn’t believe his client’s death was gang-related, but always encouraged him to get out of the neighborhood upon his release.

“I told him, once he gets out to get out of the neighborhood,” he told the newspaper. “Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time I’ve seen this.”
