Authorities continue to investigate the dismembered remains that were abandoned inside of a trash dumpster in Coahuila. In an apparent effort to minimize fear among its citizens, state officials are referring to the horrific execution as a crime of passion.

The grisly discovery was made on Sunday when police responded to a report of a body left in a dumpster in the Maria Leon neighborhood in Saltillo. After collecting evidence in the area, investigators took the remains to perform an autopsy. The victim has since been identified as Mauricio Peña Cortes, 26, Breitbart Texas reported.

Saltillo is the capital of Coahuila; the city is located approximately 275 miles south of the border with Texas.

While officials try to portray Saltillo as one of the safest cities in the area, Coahuila remains one of the main areas used by Los Zetas. The criminal group continues to use the state as a springboard to transport large volumes of drugs and illegal immigrants into the U.S.

In recent years, internal and external struggles among drug cartels have caused countless massacres in Coahuila where hundreds of victims have been incinerated, and thousands of families have been left without answers since their loved ones have gone missing.

The ruthless Los Zetas cartel, which is considered to be one of the most vicious criminal groups in Mexico, continue operating out of Coahuila. The group has been responsible for horrific atrocities in the state including countless deaths, hundreds of decapitations and mutilations.
