A woman from Seattle fought off a brutal assault by a convicted sex offender in the women’s bathroom of a park. The man, with a long criminal history, attacked her in early March while she was on a 10-mile run.

Kelly Herron referred to the incident as the “worst jogging nightmare.” She reportedly yelled, “Not today, m—–f—–,” and fought courageously to save herself, according to ABC’s Good Morning America.

Herron ran four of her 10-mile job and stopped to use the bathroom at Seattle’s Golden Gardens Park. “As I was drying my hands, I was aware that something was wrong,” she said. When Herron turned around, a man, who was later identified as 40-year-old Arizona registered sex offender Gary Steiner.

As she recalled the terrible event, she said, “He took me down to the ground, hit my knees and legs, and then it was a fight on the bathroom floor, and I kept screaming, ‘Not today, m—–f—–‘.”

After she had locked herself in a stall, Steiner managed to break in and started to beat her.

Worried she was about to lose consciousness, Herron remembered her self-defense training. “I learned hard bones and soft fleshy places, so I started hitting the side of his head,” she stated.

She started scratching and punching him. “This doesn’t have to be a fair fight,” she recalled thinking. “All those little things that I learned in my life … how to punch… everything came back to me,” she remember. “I started to feel I was going to lose consciousness but I got another surge of adrenaline, and I reached for the door and got out.”

Heron eventually fled from Steiner. With the help of someone nearby, she used a carabiner to lock the man inside of the bathroom, KIRO7 reported.

They called the police who took Steiner into custody.

Authorities later found that Steiner has a long record of assaults on women dating back to the 1990s. He is in custody pending a $750,000 bond on second-degree attempted rape and second-degree assault.

Herron suffered multiple bruises and cuts from her attacker. Her GPS tracker outlined her path, before and after the incident.
