A security guard in Illinois is being praised as a hero when he shot and killed a masked bank robber who began shooting at him.

Retired sheriff’s deputy Brian Harrison was seen on surveillance footage as he immediately pulled out his holstered pistol and shot the bank robber, identified as 34-year-old Laurence Turner inside of the Alpine Bank in Rockford, according to WALB.

“There is no doubt in my mind the actions of Brian Harrison saved lives of those that were employees in the Alpine Bank and saved his own life,” Winnebago County State Attorney Joe Bruscato said on Wednesday.

He said Harrison’s behavior was justified because he shot Turner in self-defense and was defending others who were at the bank.

The suspect was on drugs when he walked into the bank on January 20th and shot at the ceiling before targeting Harrison, who hit him in the chest and buttocks.

“They are taught to shoot center mass in the body. This is a dynamic, active situation and he’s doing what he was trained probably for 30 years to do and it was to eliminate and take care of the threat,” Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said to WREG.

Three employees were on duty, and a customer was in the drive-through when the shooting occurred. No one else was hurt.

Investigators connected Turner to three other armed robberies in which he also fired his gun in 2016.

He robbed a laptop from Mincemoyer Jewelers on November 23rd, stole money from Harvard State Bank on November 28th, and also took cash from the Members Alliance Credit Union on December 16th.

“Those cause greater concern, someone who’s willing to fire a weapon is a little more important to us,” O’Shea added.

Alpine Bank said in a statement to the Rockford Register Star that Harrison “acted with courage and quickness to protect our family. You are a hero to every one of us.”
