Border Patrol agents working at the El Centro Sector discovered a four-year-old girl who was ditched by human smugglers in the desert mountains.

In the very early hours of Sunday morning, Border Patrol agents noticed a group of migrants illegally crossing the International Border near Mount Signal. Officials quickly went up to the group, and one escaped back to Mexico. Another jumped into a car which quickly fled the area.

The agents located a small child who was standing by herself along the road. She seemed to be in good health and was unharmed, the Washington Examiner reported.

“Who in their right mind abandons a four-year-old girl in the middle of a vast desert,” Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David S. Kim said of the brutal human smugglers. “It sickens me to think that someone would leave a child to fend for herself.”

Agents also discovered a birth certificate and information about the girl’s parents. After taking her to the El Centro Station, agents questioned her and verified the information in her possession. They ascertained that she is from Guatemala.

Parents risk the lives of their kids by turning them over to heartless cartel-associated human smugglers. They warned parents that they “are putting the lives of children in the hands of criminals.” The smugglers frequently abandon children at a dangerous place to distract Border Patrol agents while they try to escape.

Agents turned the 4-year-old child over to Department of Health and Human Services officials who will decide what to do with the child pending her immigration status.
