The leader of a violent Juarez drug cartel faction known as La Linea, translated into English as “The Line,” was reportedly killed during a two-hour gun battle with a rival group in the Mexican border state of Chihuahua on Sunday.

The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) confirmed in a statement the death of César Raúl Gamboa Sosa, alias ‘El Cabo,’ the leader of La Línea in the municipality of Cuauhtémoc, and one of the ten most wanted objectives in the entity by Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

Authorities reported seven others killed during the intense firefight. Four Police officers responding to the scene also suffered injuries in the violent altercation.

The confrontation occurred yesterday on the road near La Quemada Ranch, in the municipality of Cuauhtemoc, a mountainous region located 65 miles west of Chihuahua City, Proceso reported.

Police discovered several bodies scattered in various parts of the mountain roadway.

Authorities initially believed that the deceased subject was one of his brothers. However, officials said his wife and sister positively identified ‘El Cabo.’

A subsequent search early Monday morning of the area uncovered four other corpses located further down the road from Cuauhtémoc to Cusihuiriachi, and one more at a nearby intersection.

Mexican law enforcement officials say Gamboa ruled a mountainous region in the western part of the state. The presumed drug boss has been linked to numerous homicides in the state, authorities said.

The Mexican Army along with Federal and State Police have flooded the region, the attorney general’s office said.

Officials say the violence, which has intensified in the area over the past month, has been attributed to infighting within La Linea.

The group headed by Gamboa Sosa ignited an internal war against a rival faction led by Carlos Arturo Quintana, ‘El 80,’ for control of the mountain region, according to the El Paso Times.

Gamboa was a one-time lieutenant of Quintana before the two became rivals.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Gamboa had aligned his group with the ruthless Jalisco New Generation Cartel, who have maintained an increased presence in the state of Chihuahua.

‘El 80’ is wanted for extradition to the United States for a drug trafficking indictment out of the Federal Court of New Mexico.

Authorities recovered 14 bullet-riddled armored SUVs which were abandoned at the scene and seized firearms from the location of the gunbattle.
