Elderly man checks himself out of hospitalbefore stealing ambulance

Police in New York arrested an 83-year-old man on grand larceny charges after he checked himself out of a hospital and stole an ambulance.

According to East Meadow Police officials Donald Winkler, who resides in Merrick, became upset with the quality of care he was receiving at the Nassau University Medical Center and decided to check himself out around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Detectives said Winkler found an ambulance in the hospital’s parking lot with the keys in the ignition. He decided to jump in and drive off with the vehicle.

Officials said Nassau County Police Police later found the man at a nearby 7-Eleven. the New York Post reported.

Investigators said Winkler admitted to taking the ambulance.

He was subsequently arrested, transported back to the medical facility where he underwent evaluation.

Officers later performed a bedside hospital arraignment.

Winkler now faces second-degree grand larceny charges in connection with the theft of the ambulance.

Police haven’t indicated whether Winkler has obtained the services of an attorney.
