A Mexican military helicopter came under heavy attack by cartel gunmen after intercepting a drug-filled plane in the border state of Baja California.

Officials with the National Defense Secretary said in a statement that a Bell-412 helicopter from the Mexican Armed Forces was carrying out surveillance and reconnaissance flights on March 20th when the craft intercepted an illicit Cessna plane in the town of Lázaro Cárdenas, Ensenada.

According to Riodoce, after intercepting the apocryphal XB-EAH and XB-EAI aircraft, the helicopter forced the plane to land 23 kilometers south of the village.

However, as the military helicopter approached, a group of armed men opened fire.

Officials said the chopper was not damaged and the attackers fled on foot.

The military conducted a search of the Cessna and uncovered black bags containing 314 kilograms of cocaine; 208 packets of methamphetamine weighing more than 160 kilograms; 41 packets of heroin weighing approximately 40 kilograms; radio communications equipment; drums containing a liquid blue colored substance, and two SUVs located in the area.

The corresponding authorities seized the drugs, aircraft, and vehicles.

The army, state, municipal and federal police recently started security operations in Ensenada in the wake of a crime wave that exploded in recent weeks in this port city, according to ZETA.

Ensenada and the remaining municipalities in the Baja State had remained under the control of the Sinaloa Cartel.

However, over the course of the past year violence has surged in the region with the emergence of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, who are fighting for control of smuggling routes into the United States.
