A couple from Texas has been arrested for reportedly leaving their two young children alone in their car in the middle of the night while they went shopping at Walmart.

Verenice Moran, 18, and Yonatan Vasquez, 23, were brought into custody on Monday for child endangerment and abandonment charges resulting from an incident that took place outside of a Baytown Walmart at approximately 12:30 am.

Authorities were dispatched to the store after reports were made of kids sitting by themselves in a Ford pickup truck.

Responding officers discovered a 1-year-old boy and a 3-month-old boy in their car seats with the engine and windshield wipers still on.

Officers then approached Walmart’s management asking to help them find the parents, according to ABC7.

When Moran and Vasquez finally left the store with groceries about 20 minutes after officers arrived, they were arrested and brought in for questioning.

The young parents asserted that one of their kids was sick and they did not want to take them inside.

They also insisted that they were gone for no more than 15-20 minutes, but authorities say they were able to conclude that the children were left by themselves in the parking lot for around 40 minutes.

Both the infant and toddler were later given to relatives while their parents were booked into jail.

Moran and Vasquez made their first appearance in court on Wednesday to respond to charges against them.

The teen mother-of-two was released from Baytown Jail after she posted $2,000 bond. Vasquez is still behind bars on $37,000 bond.

The couple is scheduled to appear back in court in May.
