Texas teen Breana Harmon Talbott admits to fabricating rape story

Texas authorities say an 18-year-old white teen who burst into a church claiming she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted by three black males in ski masks has confessed to fabricating the entire story.

Denison Chief of Police Jay Burch says on Facebook that Breana Harmon Talbott was undressed and bleeding on March 8 when she alleged she was raped in the woods behind the church in Denison, 75 miles northeast of Dallas.

Burch says investigators searched the area and “almost immediately, Talbott’s story and allegations began to unravel.”

“The alleged crime reported by Breana Harmon Talbott made many in the community fearful there were individuals abducting women. Even though we know the story to be a hoax, there is still potential damage to the reputation of the City of Denison and the Texoma region as many may remember the reported crime but not the outcome. That is unfortunate,” Burch wrote.

Investigators believe the crime scene, was staged and the injuries Talbott sustained were, in fact, self-inflicted, The Washington Post reported.

The Police chief said Talbott “admitted to the hoax” Tuesday.

She now faces a charge of filing a false report to a peace officer, which is a misdemeanor.

Police officials said the false incident generated outrage in far-right and white supremacist social media circles.

Burch called the hoax “insulting to our community and especially offensive to the African-American community.”
