Authorities in Mexico say a top leader of the Sinaloa cartel was executed on Friday in the border state of Chihuahua.

The Mexican Attorney General’s Office (PGR) confirmed the death of 39-year-old Mario Eleno Corral Félix, alias “El Cepillo,” a plaza boss for the Sinaloa Cartel, who controls the region surrounding the cities of Balleza, Guadalupe, and Calvo.

The cartel leader was one of Mexico’s most wanted security objectives listed by the PGR.

State Police agents discovered the body of Corral Felix in the community of La Cueva del Burr, located in the municipality of Guadalupe and Calvo.

Authorities found the capo with a gunshot wound to his left temple, Proceso reported.

Officials said the sister of Corral Felix positively identified the body, which was then transferred to the town medical examiner’s office for an official autopsy, while ministry agents worked to determine the responsibility and motive for the killing.

The death of the capo comes in the wake of a spiraling wave of violence across the state.

Chihuahua’s border with Texas makes the state a vital strategic point for drug trafficking operations into the United States and is equally important for the smuggling of weapons into Mexico.

Mexico’s Security Cabinet recently attributed a surge in the homicide rate in Chihuahua to a turf war for control of the drug trade between the Sinaloa, Juarez, and Jalisco New Generation Cartels, which erupted following the recent extradition of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

A recent security memorandum indicates the conflict for control of the drug trade has prompted a sharp rise in the state’s murder rate during the first five months of state Governor Javier Corral Jurado’s new administration.

Official numbers released in the report show that from October 2016 and February 2017, Chihuahua has had the highest rate of intentional homicides in Mexico.

The State Attorney General’s Office recently announced the implementation of a prevention and surveillance operation in an effort to curb future outbreaks of violence.
