Pepe Aguilar is a famous musician in Mexico best known for his remakes of classic mariachi songs. He’s so popular, that he even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but now an image of Chinese immigrants crammed into a trunk will be associated with Pepe Aguilar.
Aguilar’s son, Jose Emiliano Aguilar was arrested on March 14th at the San Ysidro Port of Entry after he was pulled over while driving a vehicle with a female passenger from Tijuana to San Diego.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents discovered four Chinese nationals two men and two women in the truck after a subsequent search of the vehicle by a K-9 unit.
Emiliano and the female were both taken into custody on human smuggling charges and later released on $15,000 bail.
As a condition of his bail package, Emiliano is ordered to live with his mother in southern California and must undergo counseling, CBS News reported.
According to CBP officials, although the arrest occurred on March 14th, the driver’s association with his famous father wasn’t revealed until very recently.
Aguilar’s attorney Jeremy Warren released a statement, which read:
“We understand the interest in our client Jose Aguilar because of his father’s musical career. However, this case has nothing to do with Pepe Aguilar. Jose Aguilar is a young man who will address this matter in court, and not in the press. Pepe Aguilar will provide a statement shortly. In the meantime, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy.”
Jenny Garcia’s parents are fans of Aguilar’s hits. She says the arrest is not likely going to change their backing for the singer and judge of Mexico’s variant of ‘The Voice.'”
“A lot of Hispanic singers, somehow their family always gets involved with something crazy,” Garcia said.
