Authorities have raided the residence of the ex-husband of former Spice Girl Mel B, over allegations that he kept illegal firearms at the Los Angeles home.
TMZ reported that officers were already waiting at Stephen Belafonte’s $9 million Hollywood mansion when the director arrived back at his residence over the weekend.
He was immediately patted down, and then police entered the home using a battering ram, crowbar, and other tools after carrying out a search warrant for the property.
According to the gossip website, authorities were investigating the director because they were worried that he breached a previous domestic violence conviction. He had been charged with domestic violence back in 2003 and, as part of his sentence, he was banned from owning guns.
Belafonte, who is in the middle of a bitter divorce from Mel B, was not arrested and police left the residence empty-handed.
Reports indicate that the man’s brother had boasted to friends about the director having firearms in the home.
Belafonte and Mel B have long had an explosive relationship, and she was allegedly uneasy about guns being in their home.
Belafonte has maintained that he was innocent and believed that he was the victim of an April Fool’s joke.
“I have no idea what’s going on — maybe they (random people) were pranking, swatting or something like that,” he said.
Melanie Brown filed documents to end the couple’s nine-year marriage last month, citing irreconcilable differences as the cause of their divorce.
She is seeking full custody of their five-year-old daughter.
