Senior government officials in Mexico say a top-ranking lieutenant of the hyper-violent Jalisco New Generation Cartel was captured during an operation in the Pacific coast state of Colima.

The Mexican Attorney General’s Office announced the arrest of Ivan Margarito Esquivel Garcia, alias “El Terrible,” on Sunday during an operation led by the AG’s Criminal Investigation Agency.

According to Proceso, 28-year-old Esquivel-Garcia leads a cell of the New Generation Cartel operating in Colima and parts of the Terra Caliente region, including in the nearby state of Michoacan.

Mexican law enforcement officials sought “El Terrible,” for the murder of Esquivel Garcia Carlos Sierra Santana, the founder and leader of rival group “Los Viagras” back on March 4th, and for the execution of a state prosecutor in Colima, according to The Associated Press.

Authorities recovered a high powered assault weapon and cocaine during the operation, Proceso reported.

Considered Mexico’s murder capital, Colima has displaced Guerrero for having the highest rate of homicides per capita with 89 murders committed per 100,000 inhabitants, the direct result of a brutal turf war between the New Generation Cartel and their bitter rivals, the Sinaloa Federation Cartel.

Authorities say that the state’s port city of Manzanillo, which is Mexico’s busiest shipping center with 26 shipping line destined for 74 countries worldwide, makes Colima an extensive logistical hub for importing precursor chemicals for the manufacturing of methamphetamine, along with receiving cocaine shipments from South America, and smuggling narcotics to the U.S. and other foreign destinations.
