Chicago Police say a 22-year-old was gunned down, and his 43-year-old father remains in critical condition after a shootout erupted, following a verbal confrontation over walking the family dog early Sunday morning.

Authorities say the shootout transpired at around 8:20 a.m. when officers responded to a residence on Woodlawn Avenue, located in Chicago’s Burnside area.

“The two men fought over who was going to walk the dog,” according to police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. Both men then brandished weapons after the verbal quarrel and began shooting at each other.

Police officials said both men suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The son was rushed by paramedics to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to Chicago Police officials.

Emergency responders also rushed the father to Advocate Christ, where he remains in serious condition, NBC Chicago reported.

Authorities recovered two firearms at the scene. Police have yet to charge the father over his son’s killing but continue to investigate the shooting incident. The names of both men have not been released as of Sunday evening.
