Three officers airlifted to hospital following riot at Tennessee prison

Three corrections officers were injured, including one who was held hostage during after a riot erupted at a Tennessee prison on Sunday.

Two guards fled the afternoon uproar when 15 inmates took over a Turney Center Industrial Complex housing unit at roughly 4 p.m., the state’s Department of Correction reported.

Another official was taken hostage “for a period.” However, authorities have not revealed any additional details.

An inmate, whose name has not been revealed, managed to contacted WKRN-TV as the chaos erupted in the jail.

“Everybody is on edge, and they know if they give the officer up, people are going to die,” the inmate told the Nashville station. “There have some officers in here; they are ready to kill.”

The press outlet indicated that the caller was a convicted killer.

The prison’s Special Operations Unit recovered control of the disordered unit at approximately 7:30 p.m. and the three officers were flown to a Nashville hospital, two of whom are listed in critical condition.

It’s not clear if any inmates were hurt.

The medium-security prison in Only is operated by the state DOC and is located 60 miles west of Nashville. It holds roughly 1,600 prisoners.

After the uproar, the prison canceled visits scheduled for Monday.
