The head of assassins for the Sinaloa Cartel, who had recently escaped a Mexican prison, was killed during a gun battle in the state of Sinaloa on Friday.

Authorities in Mexico have confirmed the death of Francisco Javier Zazueta Rosales, alias “El Pancho Chimal,” the top hitman for Ivan Archivaldo Guzman, the son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

Officials said Rosales was killed during a “sustained gunfight” with federal forces in the Tepuche mountains of Sinaloa.

Zazueta Rosales, who was also an armed escort for Ivan Archivaldo Guzman had been arrested back in February by Mexican Marines.

The body of the “Chimal” was transferred to a Mexican Navy base

However, Rosales escaped from a Culiacan prison last month along with four other top Sinaloa Cartel operators including Juan José Esparragoza Monzón, “El Azulito,” the son of “El Chapo’s” longtime partner José Esparragoza Moreno, “El Azul.’

Sinaloa state officials said authorities recovered a stash of high-powered military-grade weapons including assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers at the scene of the battle, according to El Debate.

The body was transferred to a Mexican Navy base, where medical examiners reportedly confirmed the identity of Zazueta Rosales through fingerprints, and relatives of the deceased had arrived to recognize the body.

“El Pancho Chimal” is credited with orchestrating the ambush attack on a military convoy on September 31, 2016 in Culiacan, which resulted in the deaths of five Mexican soldiers.

Rosales was the leader of “Los Chimales,” an armed wing of the Sinaloa Cartel which has been at the center of an armed conflict against a rival Sinaloa Cartel faction headed by top capo Damaso Lopez Nunez, in the municipality of Villa Juárez.

An internal power struggle between Ivan Guzman and Lopez Nunez to fill the void of leadership following January’s extradition of “El Chapo” to the United States has left the Sinaloa Cartel weakened.
