A judge has sentenced rapper Kevin Gates to 30 months in an Illinois penitentiary following a guilty plea on gun-related charges on Wednesday.

Cook County prosecutors said the 31-year-old chart-topping Hip-Hop star whose real name is Kevin Jerome Gilyard, pled guilty to possession of a firearm by a felon and was subsequently sentenced to a little over two years in prison, The Associated Press reported.

However, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Neil Linehan did credit Kevin Gates, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for 34 days time served in jail related to the case. He has remained in custody after surrendering to authorities last month.

On Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reported the case stemmed from an October 2013 incident in which Gates was arrested in a Chicago neighborhood on a gun charge but managed to avoid custody until March.

According to court records, authorities issued at least two warrants for Gilyard’s arrest in the case, the first in 2013 after he failed to appear for a court hearing, and a second in December 2016.

Kevin Gates first busted onto the Hip-Hop scene in 2013 with the release of several mixtapes, which depicted his rough upbringing.

After signing a record deal with Atlantic Records, Gates released his debut album “Stranger Than Fiction,” which ultimately reached No. 2 on the Billboard’s Top 200 last year.
