A funeral hearse driving across the U.S. border in Arizona generated suspicions on Saturday and a subsequent search revealed thousands of dollars of pot packed into a coffin.

Agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) working at an immigration checkpoint near Tombstone, Arizona noticed the hearse traveling north from the checkpoint. Officials decided to pull over the vehicle, which had one occupant and a coffin in at the intersection of Highway 90 and Highway 82.

After questioning the man, who provided inconsistent information, agents dispatched a canine unit that signaled to the presence of drugs. Officers searching the hearse discovered approximately 67 pounds of marijuana filled inside the coffin, with an estimated street value of $33,000.

According to a CBP press release, Agents conducting the search of the funeral hearse also recovered a number of bags of manure in the coffin, which the driver used to try and conceal the odor of marijuana. Police arrested the driver, a 28-year-old American, on narcotics smuggling charges.

Drug traffickers often get innovative with developing ways to hide their supply. Officials at the U.S.-Mexico border seized 16.5 pounds of cocaine and firearm components packed in the engine of an SUV trying to get into the U.S. on April 8th. Officers originally recognized anomalies with the engine of the GMC Sonoma and called in a canine team to further investigate, which led to the discovery of the drugs.

The cocaine is estimated to be worth roughly $528,000, making it the second biggest cocaine bust at the Santa Teresa port on the New Mexico border. Officials recovered 31.5 pounds of cocaine at the same port on March 29th, which was worth approximately $1 million.

Dulles International Airport agents recently confiscated 1.56 pounds of heroin hidden inside of lollipops packed into a man’s suitcase.
