Illinois Police arrested Northwestern Defensive end Xavier Washington on possession charges following an incident off campus on over the weekend.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Evanston Police officers found Washington in possession of a half gram of cocaine during a subsequent search at an intersection after receiving calls of an off-campus disturbance around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Xavier Washington was taken into custody and charged with a felony count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Court records indicate Washington secured his release after appearing in court on Monday.

A Northwestern school official confirmed Washington’s arrest to the Chicago Tribune and announced the player’s indefinite suspension pending a school investigation into the incident.

The defensive end started eight games last season, ranking third in tackles for loss only behind Ifeadi Odenigbo and Anthony Walker Jr.

Washington was expected to be a top contributor in Northwestern’s defensive front this upcoming season with the graduation of Odenigbo and the departure of Walker who was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in last week’s NFL Draft.

However, the arrest now casts a serious doubt over the player’s future.
