Mexico’s Federal Police Anti-Narcotics unit dealt another major blow to the Sinaloa Cartel with the arrest of a high-level cartel operator and the godson of drug kingpin of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada during an operation in the Sinaloa state capital of Culiacan on Thursday.

The Mexican Attorney General’s Office announced the capture of Luis Enrique Verdugo Barraza, alias ‘El Güero,’ the alleged top liaison for the Sinaloa Cartel in South America who remains on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s most wanted list of fugitives.

DEA officials say Verdugo Barraza was in charge negotiating and organizing cocaine shipments with drug gangs from Colombia, Peru, and Costa Rica, to Mexico and destined for the United States.

The Weekly Zeta reported ‘El Güero’ is the son of José Lamberto Verdugo Calderón, another top operator who died during a clash with the Mexican Army on January 22, 2009, and purported godson of Sinaloa Cartel boss ‘El Mayo’ Zambada.

The 33-year-old Verdugo Barraza was detained with another operative identified as Alfredo ‘N.’

Mexican Authorities have also identified the 33-year-old Verdugo Barraza, as one of the main territorial and financial operators for the Sinaloa Cartel, according to a joint statement from the National Security Cabinet.

After the death of his father, Verdugo Barraza led a cell that collaborated drug shipments for both Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada Garcia and Dámaso López Núñez, ‘El Licenciado’ another top boss who’s arrest late Tuesday morning in Mexico City made worldwide headlines.

Police agents recovered radio equipment, an assault rifle, two handguns, a vehicle, methamphetamine tablets, and three kilograms of cocaine during the operation, which was conducted without having to fire a single shot.
