Three arrests made in Fort Lauderdale Airport brawl

Three residents from Long Island, New York were arrested for causing a chaotic brawl on Monday night at the Fort Lauderdale Airport that was packed with stranded passengers because of flight cancellations.

Desmond Waul, 22; Janice Waul, 24; and Davante Garrett, 22, reportedly threatened to fight Spirit Airlines staff at the front counter at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and refused to leave when directed by Broward County sheriff’s officers.

According to the New York Post, approximately 500 passengers were packed in the airline’s terminal after nine flights were canceled due to a continuing contract dispute with its pilots.

The three suspects were “threatening harm to employees and challenging them to fight,” court records obtained by NBC indicated. Their conduct “caused the crowd of approximately 500 people to become enraged, fearful, and visually upset.”

The trio resisted arrest and threatened police who attempted to handcuff them.

They have been charged with inciting a riot, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and trespassing and remain at the Broward jail on $10,000 bond.

Airport spokesperson Greg Meyer said that the airport has implemented additional security and personnel to assist Spirit, which canceled three other flights on Tuesday.

“For many people, airline travel is very challenging. A lot of people don’t do it, so they are nervous anyway,” Meyer stated. “When your flight is canceled, and you need to be somewhere at a particular time, it is an imposition, and we understand that. The airport tries to work with our partner to work with passengers.”
