An 11-year-old Massachusetts boy dialed 911 and told dispatchers, “I think my dad sells drugs” after the child discovered over 200 grams of heroin and fentanyl worth $8,500 in his father’s luggage.

The boy’s father, 40-year-old Yamil Mercado, turned himself in on Thursday and was charged with child endangerment and drug trafficking.

Mercado’s son and his 13-year-old cousin were in the suspect’s bedroom in Lawrence, Massachusetts, when they spotted what they believed were drugs in Mercado’s suitcase, Boston25 News reported.

Mercado, pictured, was arraigned Friday in Lawrence District Court and plead not guilty to charges of drug trafficking and child endangerment. He is being held without bail

Lawrence Police Chief James Fitzpatrick said the 11-year-old also saw his father selling drugs that same day.

The boy had also contacted the Department of Children and Families roughly one year ago to report that his dad was selling drugs.

Police were allowed into the apartment by the child’s grandmother on Wednesday. Mercado and his son had just moved into the boy’s grandmother’s residence.

In Mercado’s room, they discovered 212 grams of heroin and fentanyl in plastic bags, with an estimated street value of $8,500.

On Friday, Mercado was charged in Lawrence District Court. He pleaded not guilty and remains in custody instead of bail.

Mercado has three sons, the oldest of which is 16-years-old.

Fitzpatrick said: “I commend this young man for being brave to come forward and report that these dangerous substances were in his home.”
