Armed cartel members in Tamaulipas wounded three Mexican marines during a violent cartel attack in the city of Rio Bravo where they crashed into a military SUV prompting it to roll over multiple times.

Although Mexican officials have not released information related to the incident, El Universal reported the raid occurred this week in Rio Bravo, which is located directly south of Donna, Texas. While on patrol the city, a group of Mexican Marines were met by a convoy of cartel gunmen in SUVs.

The armed men opened fire on the military troops and attempted to flee the scene.

The military attempted to stop one of the cars and chased them down one of the main streets in the city. Another vehicle filled with gunmen crashed into one of the military vehicles causing it to rollover.

According to Breitbart Texas, the wreck left three marines wounded while the armed sicarios escaped. Bystanders who had run for cover during the pursuit ran to help the troops. A military helicopter surrounded the area and landed to assist the injured troops.

The violence in Rio Bravo has intensified over three weeks of clashes, shootouts, and abductions that have plagued the border city of Reynosa as rival groups of the Gulf Cartel fight for control of the region.

The brutal violence has resulted in over 30 killings, including a police officer and at least one bystander.

In Rio Bravo, the Gulf Cartel is headed by Luis Alberto “El Pelochas or M-28” Blanco Flores, a cartel leader who previously served time in a U.S. prison. Blanco Flores was arrested in 2010 in Brownsville, accepted a deal with prosecutors, and served two years behind bars.
