The Netherlands is not doing enough to bust illegal drug labs that manufacture narcotics including crystal meth and ecstasy for distribution across Europe and the U.S., senior Austrian officials announced on Monday.

An Austro-German narcotics unit has over the past year seized roughly 6,000 packages containing about 170 kilos of drugs purchased on the “Darknet,” which is a virtual netherworld.

Austria’s Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka said a significant amount of the intercepted drugs were manufactured in the Netherlands and are sent through the German postal service, according to Newsweek.

“Cooperation must get better,” the minister stated, adding that he intended to bring up the problem with his Dutch counterpart this week. “It’s crucial the production sites are shut down.”

Drug superlabs in Holland have been flooding the U.S. with meth and ecstasy

Dieter Csefan, a leading drug crime official in Austria, said his agents had seized class A drugs like cocaine and ecstasy along with crystal meth, cannabis, and fentanyl, the synthetic opioid on which the singer Prince fatally overdosed.

Csefan said drug cartels were using shipping containers for artificial labs that were making about 500 kilos every week. The primary destination for the drugs was the U.S. followed by Austria.

“These drug labs are underground,” Csefan said. “Huge containers are being buried five to six meters in the ground in the Netherlands.”

The head of Austria’s Federal Criminal Police Office, Franz Lang, scrutinized the Netherlands for neglecting to investigate the labs seriously enough.

“Sometimes we have wishes for the Dutch which are not followed up on immediately, or not at all,” Lang added.

He also indicated that the Czech Republic was another significant market and that the cooperation with the Czech government was good even though the fight against the online sale of drugs is still in its early stages.
