A Tweet quoting John F. Kelly, the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said a Border Patrol agent was killed after being stabbed in the face by a purported member of a drug cartel.

On Thursday, Elise Foley, the Huffington Post politics and immigration reporter, Tweeted: “DHS Secretary John Kelly says a CBP officer died after being stabbed in the face by a cartel member.”

Shortly after, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Twitter account stated that Agent Isaac Morales was killed. “CBP mourns the loss of Agent Isaac Morales. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and fellow agents during this time.”

Breitbart Texas reported that the El Paso Police Department issued a statement that indicates that the incident occurred on May 20th when off-duty Agent Morales and his girlfriend walked to their vehicle from a bar.

The suspect, who was identified as 39-year-old Hisaias Justo Lopez, walked up to the pair, and another couple they were walking with and started an unprovoked dispute.

Morales told Lopez that he was a Border Patrol agent, and the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed Morales. Lopez reportedly ran away, and Morales chased after him, along with his friend and other bystanders.

Lopez then abruptly turned around and stabbed the victim in the face, according to Sergeant Enrique Carrillo. Witnesses ultimately tackled Lopez and held him for authorities.

Morales was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition, and he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Prison officials told KVIA that Lopez is a U.S. citizen from Modesto, California.

He is in custody in an isolation cell at the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $2 million bond. He has been charged with murder.

“Agent Morales entered on duty February 18, 2008, as a member of border patrol academy class 749,” CBP officials said in a statement distributed by El Paso’s KVIA ABC7. “Please join Border Patrol in offering condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of Agent Morales as they cope with this loss. We ask our community to keep Agent Morales’s loved ones in their thoughts and prayers during the days ahead.”
